We encounter an alien on Mars (Scene 04) and escape to return to Earth. Our journey is interrupted by a transmission (Scene 05). Model creating grouped notes on the transmission to present to mission control back at home.

4 To spell –shul words in space transmissions Introduce word features. Re-cap some key spelling terms. Introduce -shul words using excerpts from space transmissions. Discuss meanings and establish spelling rules looking at origins.

Read through the third part of the non-chronological report discussing life on Mars.  Read Martian descriptions re-watching Scene 04.  Model memorising and recalling the descriptions using report maps with actions and expression.

6 To identify compound and complex sentences in space transmissions Watch Scene 06 where we follow a transmission to a mysterious grey planet. Compare to Mars and present the Atmosphere and Climate sections as a class or in groups. Reveal sentence features. Watch Scene 07 where where we witness a battle between two alien life forms. Model adding compound and complex sentences to a report to add detail and description. Analyse sentences and model highlighting co-ordinate and subordinate conjunctions and adding commas in compound sentences. Add actions to sentences. Learners add actions to sentences and highlight conjunctions. Add commas to compound sentences. Finish sentences choosing appropriate conjunctions and punctuation.

10 To effectively describe a Martian Review sentence features.  Re-watch Scene 07 and discuss alien life-forms. Using descriptions of  Martians from the class text we investigate expanded nouns and the choice of verbs, nouns and adjectives. Through shared writing/reading, we look at a paragraph to describe another alien life-form. Learners write a paragraph describing an alien life-form. Read and evaluate learners’ descriptions.

Finally, discuss the reason behind the conflict. Learners work in groups to plan a documentary on a planet. Practice acting out. Evaluate documentaries in progress.
