Lesson Objective
To make and describe 3D shapes
Steps to Success
1. Cut out carefully
2. Score with a ruler and pencil
3. Fold
4. Glue tabs
5. Hold
6. Vertices, Edges and Faces
Notes
-
Extend into more than one lesson if needed and if possible.
-
Euler’s formula states that for common Polyhedra: F+V-E=2
Where F= Number of faces, V= Number of vertices (Corners), E=Number of edges
Starter (10 mins)
-
Check self assessment (PP65M.10.1-Slide 2)
Introduce problems and discuss strategies (PP65M.10.1-Slide 3).
Talk Time (Pairs organised by ability)
Partners work together to solve problems. If finished, learn times table. LA concentrate on number bonds, times tables, targets or work with support in a pair or support from teacher.
Go through workings and answers.
Main (20 mins)
Talk Time (Pairs)
Revise 2D shapes including actions. (PP65M.10.1-Slides 4-5)
Review prior learning (PP65M.10.1-Slides 6-7). Watch Scene 09 (PP65M.10.1-Slide 8) continuing the Mars storyline. Revise describing 3D shapes looking at vertices, edges and faces (PP65M.10.1-Slides 9-11).
Introduce 3D shape nets pointing out the folds and tabs (PP65M.10.1-Slide 12).
Talk Time (Pairs)
Learners guess shapes from nets. (PP65M.10.1-Slides 13-15)
Explain that today we will be making 3D shapes in groups to be able to describe them to Mission control. Go through and repeat the steps in cutting, scoring, folding and gluing a net, adding actions to pictures, stress the scoring procedure to make folding easier (PP65M.10.1-Slide 16). Some learners will be be making more straight forward shapes with others having a go at more complicated shapes. Explain that after making their shape they will colour in vertices, mark edges and number faces (PP65M.10.1-Slide 17). As a group, they will double check each shape and add information to a group table. Finally, for each shape they need to add each shape’s faces and vertices and take away edges. (PP65M.10.1-Slide 18)
Organise children into mixed ability groups and hand out differentiated nets (printed on different colour card- see notes). Introduce the steps to success and activities for the groups. Explain that if they complete their shape they may help a friend or choose another net. (PP65M.10.1-Slides 19-20)
Groups (20 mins)
Mixed Ability Groups
Cut out a differentiated net, score them, fold and glue. Count vertices, edges and faces with support from a friend if needed. As a group complete a table for six shapes (SEN Teacher Shape Nets & PC65M.10.1).
Ext – Create another 3D shape
Plenary (10 mins)
Introduce Euler’s Formula (see notes) and ask groups to double check their shapes and correct errors (PP65M.10.1-Slide 21).
