Lesson Objective
To use strategies to answer procedural and reasoning Maths questions
Steps to Success
1. Read and highlight key points in question.
2. What type of question is it?
3. Draw pictures?
4. What maths?
5. How many marks?
6. Estimate
7. Workings out
8. Double check
Notes
-
Allow 15 mins. If only using PC65M.14.1 and PC65M.14.3.
-
Combine PC65M.14.3 and PC65M.15.1 and increase assessment time to 30 mins. if preferred. Choose questions to mark and evaluate on Day 15.
Starter (10 mins)
-
Check self assessment (PP65M.14.1-Slide 2)
Introduce problems and discuss strategies (PP65M.14.1-Slide 3).
Talk Time (Pairs organised by ability)
Partners work together to solve problems. If finished, learn times table. LA concentrate on number bonds, times tables, targets or work with support in a pair or support from teacher.
Go through workings and answers.
Main (15 mins)
Review the different types of maths questions adding actions e.g. mime pressing keys on a calculator for straight procedural mathematical problems and using an eye glass for reasoning problems (PP65M.14.1-Slides 4). Repeat strategies in answering them using pictures and actions e.g. mime highlighting, stroking chin for what question, a tick for how many marks, question mark for estimate, scribbling for workings out, two ticks for double checking, different signs for what maths and drawing a picture (PP65M.14.1-Slides 5). Look at examples of questions using strategies (PP65M.14.1-Slides 6-7).
Explain that they will now use these strategies independently to answer questions on the topics we have covered in this unit. They will have a set time (see notes) to answer a number of questions. Discuss time management and if they finish to early they need to double check each question working out using a different method if possible. (PP65M.14.1-Slides 7-8)
Groups (15 mins)
LA
Answer a number of Year 3 and Year 4 age related questions. Provide support to boost confidence if suitable (PC65M.14.1).
Ext – Double check questions. Have a go at higher level questions- PC65M.14.2.
LMA, MA & HA
Answer a range of questions. Provide support to boost confidence if suitable (PC65M.14.3).
Ext – Double check questions.
Plenary (20 mins)
As a class, mark and evaluate questions. (PP65M.14.2-Slides 2-18)
