Starter (10 mins)
-
Check self assessment (PP65M.7.1-Slide 2)
Introduce problems and discuss strategies (PP65M.7.1-Slide 3).
Talk Time (Pairs organised by ability)
Partners work together to solve problems. If finished, learn times table. LA concentrate on number bonds, times tables, targets or work with support in a pair or support from teacher.
Go through workings and answers.
Main (25 mins)
Review prior learning (PP65M.7.1-Slide 4). Watch the final part of Scene 06- from 3:48- again (PP65M.7.1-Slide 5). Discuss not just finding the perimeter of the hole in the solar panel but also the area of panel needed in order to communicate with Earth.
Look at a problem and discuss (PP65M.7.1-Slide 6). Start from simple area and model measuring area in a rectangle by counting squares of one centimetre in width and length. Explain that is why we measure area in squared centimetres (PP65M.7.1-Slide 7). Repeat for examples, including half squares (PP65M.7.1-Slides 8-9). Set Group A off if suitable. (PP65M.7.1-Slides 10-11)
Establish a quicker method of counting squares by multiplying columns and rows and introduce the formula Area= Length x Width, repeat and add actions e.g. hold a hand out in front with palm facing front for area, hand moves horizontal for length, cross hands for multiply and hand goes vertical for width. (PP65M.7.1-Slides 12-14)
Talk Time (Pairs)
Remind how to use multiplication square and then learners test each other using the square. (PP65M.7.1-Slides 15-16)
Look at example to find area within times tables for mm, cm and m and also, if suitable, those with multiples of tens, stressing the getting rid of zeros and then adding zeros to answer shortcut (PP65M.7.1-Slides 17-19). Set Group B off if suitable (PP65M.7.1-Slides 20-21).
Move on to compound shapes modelling finding the area of two rectangles and then adding (PP65M.7.1-Slide 22). Extend, if suitable, to a missing side problem involving subtraction (PP65M.7.1-Slides 23-25).
Talk Time (Pairs organised by ability)
Learners choose or are told which calculations to do. Learners invent own if finished. Teacher or learners model answers, assessing learners if needed. (PP65M.7.1-Slides 26-27)
Introduce the steps to success and activities for Group C & D. Highlight any tricky questions, clues and explain any extra work/extension if they finish. (PP65M.7.1-Slides 28-30)
